14A49 COMMUNITY BASED POLICING MEETING MARCH 9, 2005

Sgt. Beacham conducted the meeting.

Two attendees of the March meeting commented that two chairs they donated to the Will Call Room were missing. In looking at the backs of the chairs there were several without donation nameplates. Per Sgt. Beacham, in the removal of the chairs for the remodeling of the Will Call Room and subsequent replacement of the chairs, some of the nameplates were accidentally removed. Sgt. Beacham will contact those who worked in the room and inquire about the missing nameplates.

Upon promotion to Sgt., Officer Beacham must leave Pacific Division. His departure date is approximately three weeks away. The Del Rey Homeowners and Neighbors Association expressed a desire to thank him for his service to the community and especially for conducting the monthly community based policing meetings during his tenure at Pacific Division. When asked what the Homeowners Association could do to show their appreciation, he expressed a desire to have a donation made in his name to the Los Angeles Police Memorial Fund. He will contact us with details as to where the donation should be sent A farewell celebration, to honor Sgt.Beacham, in the form of a potluck, will be held in the Will Call Room in the near future.

A few of the items on the recent election ballot were mentioned. The police and fire as well as the pension issues passed -- there is now money in the budget to hire more officers. The next task is to attract them to our area for hiring. Per Sgt. Beacham, we must do a better job of recruiting officers than we have in the past -- the police department should reflect our community.

Two men are committing crimes in Heidi Yannes’ area. They drive up in a pick-up truck and knock on the door of a home. While one of the men engages the homeowner at the front door in a conversation regarding a problem in his backyard and they proceed to the backyard, the other enters the house from the unlocked front door and ransacks the home. When the items are in the truck, he goes to the back yard and asks his partner if they are through and they drive off with the goods.

The traffic signal at Allin and Inglewood was unveiled on Thursday, March 10th.

One meeting attendee reported that flowers planted along his fence were pulled out overnight and that he phoned the police. The responsible person or persons were never found.

Sgt. Beacham commented he attended a crime control meeting and there were comments about the lack of crime in our area. Pacific Division is looking good compared to other divisions. Violent crime and property crime are down but tagging and graffiti are ongoing. He reminded us to remove any graffiti we see as soon as possible.

Residents of the condominiums next to Braddock Elementary School complained that because of the heavy morning foot traffic going to the school they have a very difficult time getting out of their driveway onto Braddock. One attendee suggested recruiting one or two parents to monitor the driveway and provide breaks to allow the residents to exit onto Braddock.

One attendee commented the cleaners at Braddock and Centinela had quite a bit of graffiti.

Sgt. Beacham reminded meeting attendees that in the rain, when you have your wipers on, you must have your headlights on as well. If you don’t, you may be subject to getting a ticket

Sal Grammatico came into the meeting at the very end and asked that the topic of dogs off leash defecating in people’s yards be discussed at the next meeting. Along with that would be the topics of cementing the front yards for parking and fence heights. He also commented that a Marcastle resident’s dog was bitten by an off leash pit bull dog.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Brier
